French Polishing is a traditional skill based around Shellac and Methylated Spirits hand worked over a timber base. All furniture from the 19th century and earlier was polished in this manner - it is rare but still used today. We have used these skills in restoration on furniture from the State Library, the Supreme Court and other period pieces.
Lacquers, both single pack and two pack are used for most new furniture. We used two pack lacquers for furniture for the New Parliament House, Canberra. Single pack lacquers are used for most domestic projects where a softer, more traditional look is needed.
Alexander J Cook Aust Pty Ltd can restore, conserver, or just polish your furniture using any of the above techniques. Simple repairs may be possible in your home, while detailed work will be taken to our workshop.
